Hardwell Yearmix 2010

Hardwell, the 22 year old rising superstar from Holland, had a breakout year in 2010. Hardwell has distinguished himself by combining the hard hitting dance floor beats from his Dirty Dutch brethren with the stadium Trance style of a more classic Dutch influence (Tiesto?). Hardwell has many years ahead of him and he will become a festival headliner if he maintains his current pace.

Max Vangeli 12.17.10 @Pacha NYC: Review

This past Friday, the East Coast hosted one of the San Francisco’s up and coming DJs, Max Vangeli. As one of the hottest and most sought-after producers of 2010, his performance was met with much anticipation. While not as seasoned a navigator of the DJ circuit as many of his contemporaries, Vangeli and his opening partner DJ Brian Massey worked together to make the most of the night, amidst a few foibles.

Kaskade 12.4.10 @Pacha NYC: Review

Last week, Pacha NYC played host to one of the most innovative names in dance music today, Kaskade. For its 5 Year Anniversary Celebration, Pacha has spared no expense in bringing the best of the best to shred up its dancefloors night after night. Check out our forthcoming David Guetta review soon.

The experience of seeing Kaskade live can be summed up like so: house pilgrims made Pacha their Mecca that night. “Taking over control” (excuse the Afrojack pun) from Manufactured Superstars of Beatport renown, Kaskade’s opening numbers included what was left of Basement Jaxx’s “Raindrops” and the sweet mashup of “Louder than Empty Streets.”

Free Music and a Free Party!

This Friday night two of your San Francisco Dancing Astronauts will be throwing down at movie opening party for Tron at The Parlor. Last time I played there was the night I met the rest of our family and you can hear the set below. Especially listen for the Dancing Astronaut shout outs. ;)

LIVE @ SAHARA TENT #2 (THE PARLOR SF) (07-30-10) by Jared-F

I did a remix for a good Friend Homero Espinosa which the label thought was too big (room) for the release. I really love the track and hope you do too! Please feel free to download and play it as much as you like.

Review: Steve Angello at Avalon Hollywood 12/4/2010

Steve Angello at Avalon 12/4 photo by Andrew Silberstein

Greek-Swedish DJ/Producer king Steve Angello swept the masses at Hollywood, California’s famed Avalon Nightclub this past Saturday evening as part of his Size Matters solo tour. As one-third of the dance DJ supergroup Swedish House Mafia, Angello is renowned globally for his highly energetic CDJ performances and eye-popping stage visuals. Saturday’s show was no exception.

The Dancing Astronaut crew arrived shortly after midnight to find a line packed with hundreds of people wrapped around Vine street. Some had tickets, some did not. But it didn’t matter: at this point, the club had hit capacity and the doormen refused to allow anyone in until guests started to leave. This is not the first incident of this sort; just one month ago, Swedish duo Dada Life‘s much-hyped show at Avalon was shut down by the Fire Marshal and riot police. Fortunately, we were still able to enter through Steve’s list, but many concertgoers either left or were forced to wait multiple hours to gain entry.

Steve Angello took the stage shortly after 1am, donning a backwards baseball cap and a simple black t-shirt. A giant crystallized 3D sign reading “SIZE” adorned the DJ booth–a reference to Steve Angello’s wildly successful EDM label Size Records. Accompanying him on stage were two female dancers dressed in fluorescent orange and lime green-striped sweats, moving along to each successive hit that Angello dropped for the masses.

Steve’s wife joined him for the majority of his set, as he dropped some of 2010′s most quintessential house tunes: Avicii’s “Romance,” Miike Snow’s “Silvia” mixed against Pryda’s “Pjanoo,” “Valodja,” and to much applause,  his remix of Pendulum’s “The Island” (alongside Max Vangeli and AN21). My personal favorite mix of the night was the unexpected blend of Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite” over Faithless’s classic “Insomnia.”

Oakenfold, Chuckie, & Roger Sanchez Facelift Tour 11.24.10 @Webster Hall NYC: Review

Tri-staters! If you didn’t make it out to this Wednesday’s Facelift party at Webster Hall, with Chuckie, Roger Sanchez, Nervo, and Paul Oakenfold headlining…you missed out on something huge. These dance music superstars played so well together, one partygoer described it enthusiastically as “house ecstasy.” And we’re inclined to agree.

Review: David Guetta at the Hollywood Palladium 11/20/10

David Guetta performs at the Hollywood Palladium on November 20, 2010 - Dancing Astronaut Exclusive

French super-producer and DJ David Guetta invaded Hollywood, California this past Saturday, November 20, playing a 90-minute set for a sold out audience. The event, presented by Insomniac Events, featured opening sets by Joaquin Bamaca and the DJ duo Manufactured Superstars.

The venue did not truly hit capacity until just a few minutes before Guetta took the DJ throne. He opened with his two biggest American pop hits at the moment, “Gettin’ Over You” and the Flo Rida-assisted “Club Can’t Handle Me.” After receiving thunderous applause from an undoubtedly young audience, Guetta transformed his set to include more minimal and tech house offerings, many of which were unreleased and reinvigorated excitement for future Guetta releases.

Fortunately, David’s set was more Ibiza than Coachella. While he primarily span Top 40 records at the Indio, CA-based music festival, this set featured his signature  LED-embedded and laser-pointing dancing robots, as well as surprise guests you’d be lucky to encounter in the Spanish party island, let alone Hollywood, California: half of the Black Eyed Peas.

will.I.am and fellow MC apl.de.ap joined Guetta on stage for a combined hour as they span energetic electro hip-hop beats, including the Black Eyed Peas’ latest house-infused single, “The Time (Dirty Bit).” Perhaps the standout hit of the night, however, was will.I.am’s closing number: Daft Punk‘s “One More Time” leading into the massive club smash, “One” by Swedish House Mafia.

On what marked the final night of his American tour, David Guetta thanked the crowd for their support and expressed his love for LA. The crowd left the venue with smiles on their faces. For Guetta this meant yet another club performance under his belt further confirming his reign as the King of Dance Music.

David Guetta‘s re-release of 2009′s wildly popular electro-pop album One Love, aptly titled One More Love, hits stores December 7, 2010. It is available for pre-order at Amazon.com. For more information on David Guetta, check out his official web site and Twitter account.

Sebastian Ingrosso 11.13.10 Pacha NYC: Review

Pacha was in top form on Saturday night in anticipation of one of Sebastian Ingrosso’s consistently superb sets. The energy was palpable and electric . Never before had I seen the place so packed and ready to party. Even the secluded, safe, and oh-so-cozy VIP area saw people wrangling with each other just to get a glimpse of Swedish House Mafia’s most charismatic member. And charismatic he was, making quick use of the air horn in tandem with his opener, “Miami 2 Ibiza”. The rest, as they say, is history. The capacity crowd rocked out all night in what Ingrosso called “his best gig here by far”.
