Techno officially declared ‘high culture’ in Berlin

Berlin has become a mecca of sorts for dance music, from its liberal partying policies to its world renowned clubbing institutions. As opposed to governments in surrounding countries — most notably England — Germany has taken a progressive stance on nightlife culture, prioritizing the growth of the scene and safety for clubgoers.

Local authorities in the German capital most recently demonstrated their emphasis on protecting club culture by deeming Berghain’s techno parties “high culture” and keeping the venue in the corresponding tax bracket — the same level as classical music. The decision was made in response to a court case in which the club was threatened with a move to the “entertainment” categorization which translated to a tax hike to 19% from the 7% it had been paying prior. Naturally, owners moved to counter this threat immediately.

The Berlin-Brandenberg fiscal court has now reaffirmed that the club is still considered “high culture” in its activities and overall significance to the German music scene, meaning that it will continue to pay a 7% tax on its entrance fees. The vote happens in stark contrast to recent proceedings in London, where the beloved Fabric club was shut down in a seemingly biased decision by police and town council members which claimed there was a “drug culture which cannot be controlled.”
