Ambient and full of promise, soundslikeLANG’s debut EP arrives

In 2014, Dave Lang was staring down a traumatic brain injury that carried with it an 80% chance of mortality. The odds were objectively against him, but that 20% was tenacious—and accompanied by the distinctive ringing of tinnitus. Lang relieved the noisy reminder of what he’d recently gone through by taking up guitar as a form of therapy. As he played, the healing power of music activated, alleviating the symptoms of the case of tinnitus that co-occured with his brain injury.

Now, eight years later, that ringing is gone, but the impact of music remains for Lang, who has since issued his debut EP, Midnight and the City, through his soundslikeLANG project. A textured, instrumentally focused three-tracker that channels the sonic character of This Never Happened content in ambient, synth-led soundscapes, Midnight and the City holds the promise of appeal to listeners who naturally gravitate to songsmiths in this realm, such as Lane 8, Enamour, and Bonobo. It’s a dulcet answer to soundslikeLANG’s last official releases, 2020’s “Breathe” and “Hold Tight.” But perhaps even more interestingly, it’s a demonstration of Lang’s dynamism; the EP tacks on to his photography and videography work in the music industry, which has aligned him with artists such as Justin Bieber, Poo Bear, and Post Malone, among others.

Spilling forth to streaming platforms with live performance dates in Los Angeles and other cities to follow, Midnight and the City is an illuminating continuation of soundslikeLANG’s raw, multimedia talent.
