The festival season in Australia is just picking up, and Avicii has snatched up the headlining spot at the EDM Stage at the touring Future Music Festival, set to kick off Saturday, March 2nd in Brisbane. The festival, hitting all major Australian cities throughout March, already has a large and diverse lineup but Avicii’s announcement is considered to be another cherry on top of this Aussie sundae for fan’s of his catchy and danceable productions from over the last several years. The full lineup includes heavy hitters like The Prodigy, The Stone Roses, Richie Hawtin, Boys Noize, Hardwell, Sven Väth, Cosmic Gate, and Madeon to name a few. If you’re anything like us, you probably spent much of the last ten days avoiding social media for fear of mention of BPM, an event quickly becoming dance music’s greatest amalgamation of (largely deep house and techno) talent at once. The sixth annual festival took place this year in Playa del Carmen, Mexico — far away from the cold winds and boring cubicles many festivalgoers left behind for a glorious combination of beaches and beats. None of us over at Dancing Astronaut were of the lucky to attend, but we did catch some of the many killer sets that went down on the playas and in the clubs. Not all of these sets are complete and they’re definitely not a replacement for actually attending, but we hope this roundup will offer even the tiniest bit of solace. Our newly crowned #1 artist of 2012 has had a career worth looking back on. His discography features everything within the world of techno, house, and even trance. Today’s Weekend Rewind features Eric Prydz’s re-edit to techno legend Sven Väth’s “The Beauty and the Beast.” The 2008 release is a minimal progressive techno track with a dark and menacing build, accompanied by a gloomy set of vocals. Looking back at our favorite artist’s old work puts things into perspective from where things were and where they are going. You can see over the years that Prydz has favored a certain level of rhythmic progression, more recently favoring the big-room sound that we saw off his 2012 Pryda album.

It’s been 13 long years since German techno visionary Sven Väth first brought his Cocoon party to Ibiza, a remarkable span of time that has seen the White Isle blossom into a global epicenter for dance music. Weathering ebbs and flows in genre popularity, Väth’s party built its reputation as an uncompromising haven for underground techno. This summer’s “Into the Magic” incarnation was no different, boasting a staggering lineup of scene stalwarts like Richie Hawtin and Chris Liebing, as well as young guns like Seth Troxler and Maya Jane Coles.
In the wake of his closing party, Väth has released a fan-centric after movie to recap the season. Featuring such vaunted acts as Loco Dice and Ricardo Villalobos, the video is a fitting capstone to an Ibiza season in which underground parties (see Enter and Cadenza) flourished. Now that Amnesia is closed for autumn, Väth is taking his Cocoon Heroes show on the road. With 17 dates announced in 13 countries — including shows in New York and Miami — those who couldn’t make it to Ibiza this summer can still experience the magic.
