Deadmau5 tunes are recognizable from a mile away, but we aren’t going to focus on the “Strobes” and “The Veldt’s” of the world. What Joel brings to the table is his impeccable ear, he crafts his sets just as he crafts his productions – meticulously. During an unplugged set, his song selection is always interesting, running the entire gamut of Deadmau5′s prolific back catalog as well as tunes from every genre. This night was no different. Although some clubgoers may have expected more mainstream fare their confusion was soon muted as Joel took control of the club with his uncanny ability for building suspense – driving the dancefloor with a steady beat instead of big builds and deep drops. Read on for a few of the tunes that defined the night.
Alex Botwin, performing under the moniker Paper Diamond, took some time at Electric Zoo 2012 to give us some insight into who he is, his philosophies, and projects. He had just finished wowing the growing crowd with a diverse set early Sunday afternoon. The set ranged from electro house to glitch hop including some of his own tracks such as “Levitate,” “Can We Go Up,” and “Time Flies,” which showcases his wide range of production skills and interests. Read more about our time with him after the break.
Last week you saw behind-the-scenes footage of Deadmau5′s new “Professional Griefers” video, and today the full five-and-a-half minute cut has hit YouTube. The “most expensive electronic video ever” features Joel Zimmerman “fighting” Gerard Way in a good old game of robo-mouse wrestling, with thousands of screaming fans and onlookers watching from outside a giant metal dome.
If you look carefully, you can see both Deadmau5′s new headphone line for SOL Republic as well as a hat from his new clothing line with Neff Headware. The computer-generated elements are rather impressive, even if the video gets slightly repetitive after a few minutes. Still, this is a Deadmau5 affair, so nothing ends up exactly as you would expect it to. Watch the full video above all the way to the end to see what we mean.
After getting such positive reviews on his first scratch video, Money Makin’, A-trak has gone ahead and started a new monthly series. “Short Cuts” features a single song being mixed by A-Trak in a variety of costumes. This week A-Trizzy took on Deadmau5′s “Ghosts N’ Stuff” – possibly as a witty rebuttal to the mau5′s comment that “We All Push Play.” It’s always nice to see DJs flexing their mixing skills – something that is a bit of a rarity these days.
Deadmau5 is back to the internet after a brief technology hiatus, and luckily he’s previewing the new stuff. “Professional Griefers” is getting a music video and he is going big instead of going home. This preview video takes us behind the scenes of the production, which features 2000+ fans and tons of tech — including Joel’s new RED Camera, which he used to shoot an HD teaser for “Bleed.” The video discusses the epic robot fight that will be graphically animated, which was also previewed a week ago. It seems Joel is working hard on >album title goes here< and we can’t wait to see the results when it is released September 25th, and the video will be in out in just over a week on August 29th.
We caught a glimpse of Amon Tobin’s live show, ISAM, earlier this year in the desert and were blown away by his visual production. ISAM 2.0 has finally been revealed — and it is bigger and better than ever before. It visually takes the viewer through a physical journey through the last froniter. The Brazilian producer dons an astronaut suit as he transports the audience through his unpredictable lights and sounds. Visual productions of this caliber such as Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman Live and Deadmau5′s Professional Griefers, only serve to solidify the fact that electronic music is here to stay. Although we do love the intimacy of underground shows, we can only hope that more artists embrace the creation of a comprehensive experience as the rise of electronic music allows more freedom for experimentation. The upgraded 2.0 will be touring this fall, so don’t miss out on a chance to experience his show at least once. Get your tickets here.
Deadmau5 continues to build a strong case for his upcoming album > album title goes here <, having released his follow up single to “The Veldt.” With heavy chords and high energy, “Professional Griefers” is an edgier tune, lyrics included, that is similar to efforts like “SOFI Needs A Ladder.” The production pays testament to Joel’s relentless work ethic in the studio and how the countless SoundCloud sessions will pay off when his new album drops on September 25th. Grab what you can ahead of the fall release and find “Professional Greifers” — in vocal and instrumental form — on Beatport today.
Deadmau5 has never been shy about his disdain for the more commercial aspects of the music industry and his ironically named >album title goes here< will be released on September 25th. The next single, “Professional Griefers” which features vocals by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way, is out August 14th.
Deadmau5′s fourth studio album will include many of the tracks that he has been previewing on his Soundcloud including, “There Will Be Coffee,” “Fn Pig,” “October,” “Closer,” and his hip-hop track “Failbait” with Cypress Hill. The album will also feature a collaboration with Wolfgang Gartner titled, “Channel 42.” While you’re waiting for this to drop, get your daily dose of Mau5trap with the fantastic We Are Friends EP! >album title goes here< will be available for pre-order on August 14th and you can check out the full track list after the break.
If you’re a fan of Deadmau5 it is inevitable that you’ve heard about his cat, Professor Meowingtowns. Well, SOL REPUBLIC and Professor Meowingtons have teamed up to create the world’s first pair of cat headphones — fully equipped with dog isolating technology. Whether you’ve heard about him on his owner’s Twitter feed, seen him on Deadmau5′s Instagram, or even followed him on his verified Twitter account, you know that he’s an important part of the Mau5′ life. In a case of art imitating life, the cat is about to eat the mau5 by eclipsing him in fame with his very own viral marketing campaign. Regardless of whether you have a cat or not, we suppose they could act as an interesting albeit expensive souvenir. All proceeds from sales of the $999 headphones will benefit the ASPCA.
