Jeff Montalvo, or Seven Lions as his stage name goes, has proved to be one of OWSLA’s most promising new talents. The Santa Barbara DJ/producer took over Sacramento last week with the help of Tritonal and Topher Jones for Midnite Events’ annual Give Back show, throwing down a 75 minute set of riveting dubstep, house and trance offerings. In 2012, Tomorrowland drew 180,000 dance music fans from over 75 countries around the world to the small municipality of Boom, Belgium. With international demand booming every year, festival organizers, ID&T, decided to give Belgians an exclusive pre-sale, selling all 80,000 tickets in one day. The worldwide sale took place two weeks later, with the last 100,000 tickets selling out in 43 minutes. To meet the overwhelming demand from abroad, the festival organizers are now thinking about hosting the festival at locations across the globe.
The producers of Lollapalooza, Lights All Night, and Camp Bisco are bringing their very own Counterpoint Music Festival to New York this summer. The town of Saugerties, NY voted unanimously on Wednesday granting conditional approval for the dates of July 11-13, barring the securing of mass gathering permits. MCP Presents CEO, Jonathan Fordin, expects the festival to make an announcement, including a lineup, within two weeks. Located two hours north from NYC and an hour and a half south of Camp Bisco, this will be the first concert hosted at Winston Farm since Woodstock ’94; where 350,000 muddy fans gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Woodstock. Considering Atlanta’s lineup last year, we are excited to see what Counterpoint has in store for New York.
Just to clarify, Counterpoint plans to add a second location, in addition to Atlanta.
Update: Counterpoint will return to Atlanta and the addition of a New York festival remains unconfirmed. No formal announcement has been made yet about New York, but standby for more information soon.
Nestled in the majestic backwoods of the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan, Electric Forest is truly a festival experience like no other. Every year, art installations, kaleidoscopic lights, and gallivanting vagrants fill the deep wilderness in celebration of dance music. This summer, the natural habitat will suffer (or savor) pervading basslines and reverberant soundscapes June 27th through the 30th. It is also apparent that the festival plans to expand again. With a capacity of 25,000 last year, Electronic Midwest reports festival producers have requested to nearly double the capacity to 40,000. The increase in attendance would see extended use of the grounds (similar to the Rothbury Festival in 2009) and most likely additional stages. DA will keep you updated as more information unfolds.
American transplant Jon Gaiser is arguably one of the most unique and exciting artists to emerge from Berlin’s vaunted techno scene. Although he now calls the German capital (and Richie Hawtin’s M-nus label) home, Gaiser received a steady diet of Detroit techno while growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The lineup for Lights All Night — a three day festival ending on New Year’s Eve at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas — was announced this morning. The three stage event boasts headliners including Tiesto, Avicii, Bassnectar, Calvin Harris, Axwell, and Ghostland Observatory, as well as a long list of supporting DJs ranging from Zedd, A-Trak, and Diplo to Feed Me, Adventure Club, and Nero. Three day general admission tickets for the eighteen and over crowd are going for $185, while the twenty-one plus VIP and Platinum VIP tickets sell for $450 and $875, respectively.
Music festivals are a world of fun but require a little planning if you want the experience to run as smoothly as possible. We’ve compiled a list of useful tips drawn from our own exposure with these events — in hopes that you can learn from the mistakes we’ve seen and made ourselves. Festivals are unpredictable and inevitably something will go wrong, but we think these tips will help reduce potential setbacks. While it seems like the last thing the world needs is another music festival, Pete Tong has gone ahead and announced that he will be bringing a festival to the real EDM capital of the world: Ibiza. The festival will be held annually July 1-3 (hence the 123 in the name) and will pair electronic artists with rock stars. The three days will include Sting with the Basement Jaxx, Elton John with Pnau, and Lenny Kravitz with Luciano, though other announced talent includes Axwell, David Guetta, Tiesto, Tinie Tempah, and Labrinth.
As we saw with “Superlove” we know that Lenny Kravitz has the ability to jive with EDM, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend pans out. Live performances are actually incredibly refreshing as we saw with Shermanology at EDC NY, so here’s to hoping that Pete is once again setting a trend. There is no news yet on tickets or pricing, but we’ll let you know when there’s more. Jay-Z announced his plans for the “Budweiser Made In America Festival” last week in Philadelphia, and phase one of the lineup has been revealed — and it’s quite impressive. Along with Jay, Skrillex, Miike Snow, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Passion Pit have been confirmed, along with Pearl Jam and a variety of other artists.
The festival will take place along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Saturday September 1st and Sunday September 2nd, and “an undetermined chunk of money” will benefit the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. ABC News reports that tickets are set to go on sale tomorrow, May 23rd, but the countdown on the event’s website indicates that they could be on sale at 10AM instead. Jay-Z and Skrillex at the same festival for $99? Sounds like a decent alternative to Electric Zoo.
As promised, Goldenvoice has finally shed some light on the cryptic tweet sent out Friday. The 2013 installment of the Indio-based Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will again take place over two weekends – April 12-14 and April 19-21 – and advance ticket sales begin Thursday, May 17th at 10am PDT. GA tickets will sell for $349, while a VIP ticket will set you back $799. However, you won’t get hit with supplemental service charges and various fees this year. The advance sale opportunity is scheduled to run for one week but we doubt the ticket allotment will last that long — general sale will happen early next year.
This announcement debunks all rumors floating around – third or fourth weekend, fourth day, etc – with the only major variation from last year’s format being the fully-loaded ticket price.
