M.A.N.D.Y’s Get Physical Music has been producing high-quality dance music since the early 00s. Like many other labels and brands, there’s no surprise they’ve also got a radio show and episode 60 from August 2012 was a memorable one for me. The Danish producer/DJ Tomas Barfod is in the mix showcasing a diverse array of light electronica, deep house, and techno. Get Physical releases and his own work would be expected, but the mix also features Simian Mobile Disco, Grimes, and Teen Daze.
Ten years ago, Greg and Voitek of Catz ‘N Dogz began playing together in their Polish hometown. Fast forward to 2013, through club nights, residencies, and radio shows, and the pair have landed themselves their first Essential Mix on the Radio 1. Both in this mix and more generally, their musical taste is difficult to categorize -it’s house, disco, tech, tech house, and bass. Like many of the other Essential Mixes that Dancing Astronaut highlighted so far in 2013, Catz ‘N Dogz use their 120 minutes on air to share their favorites in dance music, whether or not it fits into any particular categorical field or subgenre.
If there is, however, a bit of a theme associated with each artist’s mix, Catz ‘N Dogz’s is that of a overview of their time DJing and producing together. They ripped 12 inches of yesteryear, edited down tracks, and collected exclusives from friends at their own Pets Recordings, dirtybird, and Get Physical. You could dismiss this mix as simple, but that’d be too easy. More careful consideration reveals a deep and rich understanding of the history of house music and a discerning eye towards the future.
Daley Padley, the producer and DJ known as Hot Since 82, shows no signs of slowing his 2012 streak with the release of his latest EP Hot Jams Volume 2 on Noir Music. He’s planted his deep seed on labels ranging from Get Physical and Moda Black to Warung Recordings and Defected with a smattering of top notch originals and remixes. If there’s one thing that makes for a lasting impression these days, it’s a producer’s ability to develop a distinctive sound and Hot Since 82 has certainly done that. His low ends are about as deep as they come and tend to dominate the melodic force of the song, making for music that is both eerie and infectious. Check out the his four new originals below.
Corey Baker is probably a name with which you’re not yet familiar but in this case, we encourage you to give his latest and greatest, The Chase EP, a listen. Corey Baker is better known as a member of Wildkats, a UK-based trio who’ve released records on labels from Hot Creations to Get Physical to Akbal Music, but this is his first solo production and it’s out this week on MEXA Records.
Leeds based DJ & Producer Hot Since 82 has had a compelling year to say the least. Having topped the Beatport Top 10 with his remix to Yousef’s “Beg,” his production prowess is securely fastened into the rising-star spotlight. This week he makes his label debut on the prestigious Get Physical imprint with his Forty Shorty EP.
“Like You” — the lead track on the release – forces you to listen from the second you click play. After the drop, when his signature rolling basslines begin, you understand why you’re so hooked — this is upbeat deep house at its finest; pure and natural groove emotes with every beat. The title track, “Forty Shorty,” begs you to come along on a rhythmic ride with funky basslines leading the way. Full of throbbing energy and a soulful vocal segment, this eerie track creates a seductive vibe through and through.
