The holidays are here early for Koen Groeneveld fans, with a free bootleg download from the Dutch techno mainstay. Koen has completely reinvented the Dance Kings’ early 90s classic “Climb the Walls,” trading in the original’s analog bass line for a modern rolling replacement and delayed clicks and bloops. Despite being chopped up throughout, the throwback vocal refrain remains recognizable in this danceable new incarnation.

With all the talk of future techno these days, Dutch minimal legend Koen Groeneveld continues to prove he’s anything but the past. “Stesstjopper” is a multifaceted production that builds from bitcrushed organ chords into a dark after-hours groove, replete with stuttering synths and off-kilter industrial samples. It’s a groovy techno piece with slabs of electro blended flawlessly from first bar to last. With the infectious pull of the electro-heavy breakdown and the incessant chord play to follow the drop, this song will make for a great peak-time banger. I have never left a Sander van Doorn performance feeling disappointed, and Saturday afternoon at Electric Zoo was certainly no exception. In fact, multiple people I spoke to said it was one of one of the best sets from the festival. Not only are Sander’s shows energetic and exciting, but he always takes the stage with a grin that lets us know how happy he is to be there. His hour-long at Zoo set was full of classics like “Koko” and new hits like “Kangaroo,” but also riddled with unreleased bombs that caused the packed crowd to go wild. Koen Groeneveld’s tracks have been popping up all over the EDM scene this past year and are heavily supported by Sander van Doorn. The man is a techno machine that pumped out the funky “Ditsjz” and his impressive ”Slides EP” off of Size records. Although techno isn’t the most popular genre in the U.S, Groeneveld makes it much easier for tech newbies to appreciate the genre using his engaging style and funky melodies. After having his intricate “Slides EP” signed to Steve Angello’s prestigious Size Records this past winter, Koen Groeneveld delivers another perplexing single off of Toolroom’s Amsterdam Dance Event 2011 compilation. Most of the tracks on the compilation are familiar tech-house sounds by some of EDM’s most talented. However, with “Ditsjz,” Groeneveld offers a distinctly different yet appealing drop than the other tech-house artists, with engaging Dutch tech convolutions.
