It was easy to see why Paul Kalkbrenner is one of Germany’s most legendary electronic music acts during his performance last Thursday in Brooklyn. His enormous draw was made evident at first sight of the crowd of hundreds huddled near the entrance of Output’s doors. Last year, Kalkbrenner made his way state side for Sonar On Tour, bringing his famed brand of techno to cities across America — including a performance at Coachella’s Sahara Tent in April. New Yorkers weren’t as lucky, though, as Hurricane Sandy barred the touring festival’s stop at Roseland Ballroom to take place due to catastrophic damage to the city’s infrastructure. His Output debut would mark his first play in New York in three years, making the occasion a no-brainer for any self-proclaimed electronic music connoisseur.
The Coachella Arts and Music Festival has been host to some of the most groundbreaking talent in music throughout its 15 year history. Although relatively modest, this year’s electronic dance music presence at Coachella is the largest since its 1999 debut. Staying true to form, Goldenvoice’s bookings represent some of the most exciting artists in electronic music today – a group whose talents extend across a broad swathe of sound and styles. With the 2013 lineup heavily expanding its electronic offerings, we felt it only appropriate to share our must-see picks from the viewpoint of four fans heading out to Indio for the type of musical experience only three days in the desert could provide.
Paul Kalkbrenner released Sky & Sand with his brother in 2009, but as is the case with all of our Weekend Rewind choices it has a timeless quality. The tune is one of the first I remember hearing when I began my descent down dance music’s rabbit hole and thus it remains engrained in my consciousness. Like last week’s Weekend Rewind selection — “Alone With You” — the track is repetitive, relaxing, and an easy listen. Each brother played an integral part in the techno creation with Paul acting as producer and Fritz lending vocals. Let “Sky & Sand” act as a mellow beginning to your crazy Saturday evenings.
