The blogosphere caught wind of the collaboration between Maya Jane Coles, vocalist Victoria Hekseth of Little Boots, and James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco less than three weeks ago, and this dream team’s EP — which they are releasing under the moniker LB — is out this week on 2020Vision. Needless to say, I’m completely blown away by the collaboration’s freshman effort. On the two original tracks, both the production and vocal work tread near perfection while the selection of remixers appearing on the release deepen the range of offerings with an added dose of sonic diversity. This is the EP of dance music dreams: fresh-sounding originals paired with dubs and remixes from legends (Ralph Lawson) and hot talent (PBR Streetgang), plus danceable versions ready for the weekend. No further explanation needed, listen to all seven takes and purchase after the break.
“Er?!?” was my initial reaction when I heard Maya Jane Coles was teaming up with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco and Victoria Hekseth of Little Boots. Fortunately, however, it seems the formula for an amazing collaboration is most definitely good producer + good producer + good vocalist. A pinch of MJC’s cooing instrumentals, a dash of Simian Mobile Disco’s analogue techno flair a la more recent LPs like Unpatterns and Delicacies, and Little Boots’s soothing indie vocals are undoubtedly a match made in dance fangirl heaven for me.
