Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite Dancing Astronaut contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.
Tale of Us, Carmine Conte & Matteo Milleri, were born in North America, raised in Italy, and now call Berlin home. The duo’s world-class status translates into a multi-dimensional sound — ranging from nu-disco to house to rock influences, creating deeply moving emotional electronic music. “Another Earth” is their first release on Richie Hawtin’s Minus, which also includes tracks “Discochord” and “Lost City.” The deep basslines and flittering synths tell an intriguing story of tech house excellence. The EP will be released on vinyl April 8th and digital April 10th. Also, check them out at the CircoLoco Miami party next week.
If you’re anything like us, you probably spent much of the last ten days avoiding social media for fear of mention of BPM, an event quickly becoming dance music’s greatest amalgamation of (largely deep house and techno) talent at once. The sixth annual festival took place this year in Playa del Carmen, Mexico — far away from the cold winds and boring cubicles many festivalgoers left behind for a glorious combination of beaches and beats. None of us over at Dancing Astronaut were of the lucky to attend, but we did catch some of the many killer sets that went down on the playas and in the clubs. Not all of these sets are complete and they’re definitely not a replacement for actually attending, but we hope this roundup will offer even the tiniest bit of solace. The underground has weighed in on 2012. Resident Advisor‘s annual poll came out today and, per usual, its overlaps with DJ Mag Top 100 are few and far between.
This year saw American techno transplant Seth Troxler ascend to the poll’s coveted pinnacle, while Richie Hawtin‘s unprecedented CNTRL: Beyond EDM tour and eye-opening ENTER Ibiza debut buoyed the M-nus boss into the number-two slot. Eclectic Berlin producer Dixon, Crosstown Rebels darling Maceo Plex, and Klockworks owner Ben Klock round up the rest of the top-five, respectively, while Hot Creations boss and last year’s number-one Jamie Jones clocks in at the sixth spot. Hawtin’s CNTRL comrade Loco Dice, Chilean-German sensation Ricardo Villalobos, Tale of Us, and London deep house hot-shot Maya Jane Coles fill out the rest of the top ten.
